Listen Before You Assume

Listening protects relationships from the stories we invent when we answer before we understand.

Small Choices, Faithful Living · 19–25 October
“Make room for understanding before you prepare your answer.”

Proverbs 18:13

Proverbs calls it folly to answer before listening. Assumption rushes to fill the gaps, but careful listening gives truth and compassion room to enter the conversation.

You do not have to agree with every conclusion to understand what another person is saying. Slow the exchange, ask one honest question and let the person finish before deciding how to respond.

One faithful step

Ask one clarifying question, listen without interrupting and repeat what you understood before giving your answer.
